Non‐Monotonic Response of the Climate System to Abrupt CO 2 Forcing

چکیده

We explore the climate system response to abrupt CO2 forcing, spanning range 1× 8×CO2, with two state-of-the-art coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea-ice-land models: NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies Model E2.1-G (GISS-E2.1-G) and Community Earth System (CESM-LE). find that effective sensitivity is a non-monotonic function of in both models, reaching minimum at 3×CO2 GISS-E2.1-G, 4×CO2 CESM-LE. A similar found Northern Hemisphere surface temperature, sea-ice, precipitation, latitude zero precipitation-minus-evaporation, strength Hadley cell. Interestingly, Atlantic meridional overturning circulation collapses when non-monotonicity appears does not recover larger forcings. Analyzing over same slab-ocean versions we demonstrate system’s linked ocean dynamics.

Freshwater forcing of abrupt climate change during the last glaciation.

Large millennial-scale fluctuations of the southern margin of the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet occurred during the last deglaciation, when the margin was located between about 43 degrees and 49 degrees N. Fluctuations of the ice margin triggered episodic increases in the flux of freshwater to the North Atlantic by rerouting continental runoff from the Mississippi River drainage to the Hu...

Physical Climate Response to a Reduction of Anthropogenic Climate Forcing

Recent research indicates that the warming of the climate system resulting from increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the next century will persist for many centuries after the cessation of these emissions, principally because of the persistence of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and their attendant radiative forcing. However, it is unknown * Corresponding autho...

Radiative forcing and climate response

We examine the sensitivity of a climate model to a wide range of radiative forcings, including changes ofsolar irradiance, atmospheric CO2, 03, CFCs, clouds, aerosols, urface •bedo, and a "ghost" forcing introduced at arbitrary heights, latitudes, longitudes, easons, and times of day. We show that, in general, the climate response, specifically the global mean temperature change, issensitive to...

Sensitivity and rapidity of vegetational response to abrupt climate change.

Rapid climate change characterizes numerous terrestrial sediment records during and since the last glaciation. Vegetational response is best expressed in terrestrial records near ecotones, where sensitivity to climate change is greatest, and response times are as short as decades.

Response of seafloor ecosystems to abrupt global climate change.

Anthropogenic climate change is predicted to decrease oceanic oxygen (O2) concentrations, with potentially significant effects on marine ecosystems. Geologically recent episodes of abrupt climatic warming provide opportunities to assess the effects of changing oxygenation on marine communities. Thus far, this knowledge has been largely restricted to investigations using Foraminifera, with littl...
